I use tape...two strips on each hand under the grip, and a little on the sides to avoid side ripping from the grips moving/friction. It's not a waste...you can reuse the strips several times before they are worn out and you need to make a new one, and plus you use more band-aids and time if you get a rip!

No one uses those beginner type of grips at my gym anymore, my friend says they stopped using those like 5 years ago or something - because it was better not using grips than using those,and that those could cause the rips too,And don't help with the grip on the bars like the dowels.
