Jose Gomez, grandfather of Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez, has revealed that the 26-year-old rejected an offer to join Real Madrid.
The former Stuttgart man has been in fine form this season, scoring 37 goals in all competitions. And Bayern have recognised his contribution, recently offering him a contract extension which he signed earlier this week.
"Madrid wanted him... but he didn't want to come," Jose Gomez told Goal.com. "He says he's very comfortable at Bayern, especially now that the coach is placing his trust in him.
"He has just renewed until 2016 and is very happy. And his grandmother and I are as well, because things seem to be going really well for him."
Bayern will take on Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals later this month. And his grandfather, a Granada native and lifelong Blancos fan, admits his allegiances on the matter are mixed.
"I think things will be quite hard for Bayern, they are good, but I think Madrid are better. I want Madrid to win because they are a Spanish team, but another part of me wants Mario to win because he's my grandson."
Mario Gomez's father immigrated to Germany, and his son was born in Riedlingen. The striker is a senior international for the DFB Eleven, having scored 21 goals in 51 appearances for Joachim Low's side.
