Schools Failing Blind & Visually Impaired Children
Article Added 16 years ago
It was reported today by the Press Association that blind children are unfortunately not getting the support needed to excel in our school systems today. Why? Lack of Braille books and material to according to the the Association for Higher Education Access and Disability.
In fact just 17% of blind / visually impaired kids to on to college compared to 55% of those without a disability. Again these children some times need to wait an unacceptable time period before a Braille book or minimally a chapter from the book is converted to Braille.
Therefore these kids become disadvantaged at the secondary level and are not prepared to continue onto college by not getting the necessary resources like books that other children get freely. The result not only in a major drop in confidence but a feeling of being inferior.
At The Blind Judo Foundation www.blindjudofoudnation.org we introduce blind and visually impaired children to the sport of Judo. Here they learn the "tenets of Judo". Confidence, Character, Commitment, Humility, Respect and Responsibility. This doesn't substitute for a lack of Braille books but it does promote overcoming those obstacles and believing in oneself.
