Everyone today, including blind and visually impaired individuals of all ages are concerned about being Green or going Green. This includes hybrid cars which are run on electricity and gas-battery as they traverse across our American streets. We certainly all need relief from the $4.00++ cost of gasoline. However, this hybrid cars pose a very hazardous and potentially deadly problem to blind and visually impaired children, young adults and the 10 million plus community of visually impaired individuals. One might say that visually impaired people are not deaf. However, with out 20/20 sight and a lack of noise in tranditional cars, it is most difficult for blind and visually impaired to feel secure as they cross streets and intersections with hybrid cars in their path. This is truly a clear and present danger not only to blind and visually impaired but to sighted individuals alike. Traffic sounds provides a vehicles position as one crosses the street, parking lots, drive-ways along with the noise of there acceleration. This all helps with audible clues for a blind and visually impaired individual. It is interesting to note that just last week the Federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration held its first public meeting on the issue. Various organization like American Federation of the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind and conducting demonstrations to illustrate the potential hazards being realized by these silent cars. Be aware of the pedestrian dangers to all and especially those with seeing eye dogs and white canes.
