California men's tennis freshman Riki McLachlan defeated Kurt Thein (USA) in the first round of the U.S. Open Junior qualifying event, 6-1, 6-3, today at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Representing New Zealand, McLachlan broke serve six times to secure his victory in just over an hour on court and will face Suk-Young Jeong of Korea in the second round of qualifying Saturday (Sept. 5). McLachlan is part of a field of 32 competitors each vying for an at-large bid to the main draw to be announced on Monday, Sept. 7.
