Michael Phelps has won 19 Olympic medals so far, with the latest medals silver in the 200-meter butterfly and gold in the 4x200 team relay. South Africa's Chad Le Clos won gold in the butterfly with 1:52.96 seconds, just 0.05 ahead of Phelps, actually almost a second off his winning time in 2008 of 1:52.03. It was really close, looking like Phelps had it, but Le Clos took an extra stroke to hit the wall, and Phelps looked like he was stretched out, gliding for the wall too long. In an interview with NBC after the freestyle relay race, Phelps said he has been training differently this time round, and he is enjoying his 4th Olympics. He attributed the close finish in his specialty, the butterfly, to maybe lazy wall touches rather than hard agressive wall touches during practice: “I’m not going to sit and make excuses. Those lazy finishes were decisions I made.”

As they made their way around the pool deck and posed with their medals, Le Clos said Phelps told him “to enjoy the moment because it’s really special” and explained the best way to negotiate the next half-hour because neither swimmer was done for the night.

After the butterfly, Phelps swam as the anchor for the U.S. men's swim team in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. His teammates Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, and Ricky Berens gave him a big lead and helped him break the Olympic record for most medals won with the gold win, breaking the 18 Olympic medals set by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina.
Medal count: Phelps has 19 medals, including 15 golds, and three races to go: the 200 individual medley, the 100 butterfly and the 4x100 medley relay.

“It was an emotional feeling and a pretty good way to end the night,” said Phelps, whose eyes welled with tears during the playing of the national anthem at the relay medals ceremony.
He added: “The biggest thing I’ve always said is, anything is possible. I put my mind to doing something that nobody had done before and nothing was going to stand in my way.”
