Feathers V Fezzes: Chiefs and Saracens Go Head-to-Head for Aviva Premiership

Excitement is building ahead of the biggest game in English domestic rugby on Saturday. Twickenham stadium will play host to 80 000 fans and the Premiership’s number one and two table finishers; Saracens and Exeter Chiefs. The event will provide some historic outcomes for whichever team that comes out on top. Saracens, who won the European Champions Cup a mere two Saturdays prior, are looking to become the first English team to win the double since Wasps in 2004. Exeter meanwhile, just six years and two days after winning promotion to the Premiership, have the chance to dethrone the current title-holders and call themselves champions of the top tier. Chiefs have found themselves on the receiving end of some fickle fortune in the lead-up to the encounter, however. Scrum-half Will Chudley has dodged a bullet after an RFU disciplinary panel cleared him of reckless play after allegedly kicking Joe Launchbury in the head in the semi-final win over Wasps. A previously unseen camera angle appeared to reveal that Chudley’s leg had been deflected off of another player in the ruck before making contact with Launchbury’s head. The news was welcomed by the club, fans and Chudley himself, who has never been carded and played an integral role in getting his side to the final. Exeter Chiefs Road to the Final

The team’s – nay – the Premiership’s top try scorer this season, Thomas ‘The Tank’ Waldrom, despite becoming the impact player of the competition and a key cog in the Exeter set piece, wasn’t so lucky and will not play a part in the final after sustaining a knee injury against Wasps. Back-row partner Don Armand was upset for his dedicated teammate: “It’s really horrible for someone like ‘Tank’ especially, who puts so much time and emotion into the team and you can see that by the way he plays”. Sarries’ own top try scorer this season hasn’t been without his own troubles this past week however. Chris Ashton, who is currently just two tries behind Waldrom’s 13, was denied a place in the England team touring to Australia. After a run of form which many thought would silence the critics and surely get Ashton a seat on that plane, Eddie Jones decided otherwise. The Saracens faithful and Ashton supporters can now only wait with baited breath to see if the winger can channel his frustrations effectively and leave Jones with some second thoughts.
