80m try helps Vannes secure ProD2 promotion

Vannes became the first team from Brittany to secure a place in France's second division ProD2 after they beat RC Massy 57-44 in the Fédérale 1 play-off on Saturday. They will play fellow promotees Soyaux Angoulême XV in the final in June. In such a high scoring match, it was difficult to select the best of the tries, but one that stood out in particular was an 80m effort finished off by full back Anthony Bouthier. From their own half, Vannes showed fantastic attacking spirit and found the necessary space for Bouthier to use his speed with a neat draw and pass. From then on, Bouthier had a lot of work to do but he was invariably helped by some weak tackling on the part of Massy's back three. Bouthier managed to power his way through three defenders on his way to the try-line which at that point, had given his side the lead. The match was played out in front of 9,000 spectators who witnessed history being made in an end-to-end match. You can view Bouthier's try in the video below. The Fédérale 1 explained: The Fédérale 1 league works differently to that of ProD2 and the Top14. There are two separate play-off pools, one for ProD2 promotion and one for the Trophée Jean Prat. Those who seek promotion have to apply to the French Rugby Union (FFR) and provide a dossier - in order to avoid the situation Lille encountered in 2014, where they didn't have the budget for ProD2. Once these are approved, the top two teams automatically qualify for the semi-finals with the rest playing quarter finals. The winners of the semi-finals are promoted.
