gymnast to diver
"Gymnast turned diver gives NU hope for invitational" - http://www.dailynebraskan.com/media/storage/paper857/news/2006/11/17/DnSportsPickem/Gymnast.Turned.Diver.Gives.Nu.Hope.For.Invitational-2466975.shtml?norewrite200611181655&sourcedomain=www.dailynebraskan.com
One of Chikina's finds for this year's squad came from the NU women's gymnastics team. Junior Dani Millis joined the diving team after three injury-plagued seasons as a gymnast. Millis traded handsprings for springboards since her ankles couldn't handle the stress of landings on vault and floor exercise. Diving has proved to be an interesting challenge for Millis. Despite her genuine athletic ability, taken from 15 years of gymnastics training, flipping into water is a bit different from flipping into a landing. "Transitioning was difficult at first," Millis said. "A lot of the things like timing and skills are different, but I think now everything is smooth."
A lot of people I know have done that. one girl was going to college and decided to dive instead of do gymnastics. 2 other girls do both gym and dive. I used to be really afraid of diving boards until this summer when this guy got me doing some crazy stuff at a pool party( backhand back tuck off, w/e he could think of. He did some front hand double fornts off-no way I would try that!) lol

flyingflex: you can do that dismount from the beam now! is ur friend a gymnast too? handspring double front from board is cool! :D also, in the summer olympics a girl switched from gymnastics to diving and got to the olympic level for diving pretty fast! plus, lots of divers do gymnastics for the aerial flipping part of it.

I'm only a level six w/that dismount idea. He used to be a gymanst when he was little, but still loves it. We go to open gym together sometimes.......he can almost do a standing back tuck! He even did a cartwheel on beam. I was pretty surprised. Plus, nothing scares him. PERIOD. At the pool party, he did a tukc off the roof of the building into the pool. He runs up walls and then does a tuck off of that. It's pretty cool to watch him go.

that's cool! it does happen a lot that gymnasts do diving, and pole vaulting too. all flying, you know! :D here's another story on a gymnast doing diving: "Gymnastics gives 'Cats diver her edge" - http://www.greeleytrib.com/article/20061206/SPORTS/112060063/-1/rss03
Lehmann just discovered the sport in a little different way than most do.A gymnast since she was little, Lehmann was given the opportunity to see what she could do on a diving board when, out of the blue, a group of girls invited her to practice with them when she was swimming. With only a little hesitation, Lehmann tried it and hasn't looked back since. "I was like, 'Oh no,'" Lehmann said. "But they insisted, so I did it, and it was just like gymnastics -- kind of."
The diving coach, a former gymnast too, compares the 2 sports:
Greeley diving coach Ben Wells, 22, who used to be a gymnast himself and coached the sport on one level or another since he was 15 years old, said the two sports are similar with one glaring difference. "They have a lot of the same forms, but diving is much more technical with the abilities of twisting with the flips," Wells said. "It's body awareness in the air. A lot of it is the same except landing on your head. "They prefer you not do that in gymnastics." Lehmann agrees.
We have divers practicing in our gym, doing flips in the pit and on the trampolines, kind of like in the pool in terms of air direction and flying, but you go for landing on your feet instead of head-first. :D
