Kerri Strug - article - gymnastics & pain
There's an article on Kerri Strug, she did an interview / talked at Ball State University: "Gold medalist speaks at Ball State" - http://www.thestarpress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061107/SPORTS/611070324 The article's not totally right...lol....but it's interesting (they misspell Karolyi and write Karoli, and the U.S. really didn't need Strug to do her 2nd vault to win, as they later announced everywhere in the news). Kerri Strug on gymnastics & pain:
And so, for years, the petite gymnast endured a grueling schedule that grew into a monotonous routine. "It was all very robotic," she explained of her schedule, which had her training in the gym from dawn past dusk. Strug also endured an incredible amount of pain, suffering injuries to her stomach muscles and fracturing her back long before hurting her ankle at the 1996 games. "As an elite athlete, you learned quickly that pain was part of the game," she said.
She doesn't miss gymnastics:
As for getting back on the bars or beam, Strug said she leaves that to the little ones she helps at gymnastics camps and clinics. "I don't actually miss being in the gym," she said. "I've reached a point where I don't want to know what my body can't do anymore. And, the older I get, fear has become a factor. I think it prevents me from wanting to get injured again."
That's very interesting, but understandable.
