Artistic gymnastics competition will be: Qualifications on November 28, men's team final and women's all-around final on November 29, then event finals over three days - men's floor exercise and pommel horse and women's floor exercise and vault on December 1, men's rings and vault and women's uneven bars on December 2, and men's p-bars and high bar and women's balance beam on December 3. For China, 4 of the best women for that country will be competing: Cheng Fei, Jiang Yuyan, Pang Panpan, and Zhou Zhuoru. For their men's team, none of them will be the 6 that competed at Worlds this year. Good for Chellsie Memmel and Bridget Sloan to show what they can do to get on the USA team. Chellsie Memmel coming back from inury, so didn't compete at 2007 Worlds and only did floor on the first day of US Nationals. And Bridget is one of the new comers, was the alternate at 2007 Worlds.

Memmel left for China yesterday for the competition. Going to do all 4 events, but still watered-down routines:
In Beijing Memmel plans to compete all four events for the first time in more than a year, when she's dealt with shoulder and ankle injuries. "I want to go out there and try to best that I can," she told IG. "It's the first all-around I've done since Worlds in 2006, so it's really just trying to get out and compete again." Memmel said most of her routines aren't at full content yet, and she hasn't added any new skills except for a Tkatchev on uneven bars. "My routines are still watered back from where I was," she said. "We're working on getting my old routines back and then we'll start working some new stuff."
http://intlgymnast.com/news/2007/nov/112307_memmel.html

"Big names stay away from Olympic gymnastics test event (Eastday.com)" http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/viewtopic.php?t=11819 Getting ready for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Conservative on the competitions: Men's:
Big names like triple world champion Bubbly Johnson, two-time world individual all-around titlist Yang Wei and Japan's renowned gymnast Hiroyuki Tomita are all absent from the roster of Beijing Olympic gymnastics try-out slated for Nov. 28 to Dec. 3.

Host China spared the entire men's squad for Stuttgart World Championships from the tournament. The world men's team winners, composed of Yang Wei, Huang Xu, Xiao Qin, Chen Yibing, Zou Kai and Liang Fuliang, were all arranged to take early "winter training" instead of competition in the Invitational. China dispatched a back-up squad consisting of Lu Bin, Feng Zhe, Guo Weiyang, Yan Mingyong, Lv Bo and Liang Mingsheng. Like what China did, Japan held off Hiroyuki Tomita, 2005 all-around world champion, and Hisashi Mizutori, the triple bronze medallist in Stuttgart. The only high-profile athletes in Beijing came from high-flying Germany and South Korea. Fabian Hambuechen from Germany injected vigor to the tournament. He ignited the enthusiasm of his home crowd by collecting a medal of every color at the Stuttgart worlds. Hambuechen inspired the German team to a bronze, secured silver in the all-round competition and rotated and released stylishly for the horizontal bar gold. South Korea brought all their top contestants as Kim Dae-eun, who finished first in parallel bars in Stuttgart, and underscored Athens Olympics all-around bronze medallist Yang Tae-young.
Women's:
It's a similar scenario in women's events. US took back their ace Bubbly Johnson, the triple world champion in floor, all-around and women's team. Johnson's world championships' teammates Nastia Liukin and Alicia Sacramone also said no to the trial.

The United States just sent Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 world all-around champion, here with hopes of a return for the 2008 Olympics. Memmel and fellow American Bridget Sloan, a member of this year's world championship team, will compete in individual and all-around events. Romania's double Olympic champion Catalina Ponor and rising star Steliana Nistor didn't come to Beijing. It's China, who faltered to one gold from three last year in the world championships, that presented a decent line-up. China pitched women squad spearheaded by Cheng Fei, who won her third successive vault title in Stuttgart. The other three gymnasts all have experiences from world championships. Pang Panpan and Zhou Zhuoru are members from the 2006 world women's team champions, while the teenager Jiang Yuyuan impressed everybody in this year's world championships. Chinese women team experienced some humiliating errors at the Stuttgart worlds, so they would like to take advantage of the Olympic test run to pull everything back on track.
China's women's team use competition to prove they can perform. Competition takes time away from practice. Especially also travel time, working on routines for competition vs. for practice, hard pounding vs. pit and tumble track and mat tumbling.
It's not strange for most of the notable gymnasts being absent. Everything came to surface with the gymnastic worlds just wrapping up, so the leading national teams would prefer to make full use the last few months on Olympic preparations rather than being interrupted by competitions.
Australia is probably also using the competition as a test practice event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as they had some mistakes at the 2007 Worlds in Stuttgart and felt they could have done better. Dasha Joura is at a good start, leading the individual all-around qualification, ahead of USA's Bridget Sloan by .425 points. USA's Chellsie Memmel is in 4th all-around now, with first on beam, just .25 points ahead of Japan's Keiki Mukumoto. China's Cheng Fei skipped bars and did only 3 events, and was the highest scorer on vault on floor. China's Pang PanPan and Zhou Zhuoru performed exhibition only for China, but both would have qualified to beam finals. Daria Zgoba, the girl who they were talking a lot about regarding her homemade grips during a mistake on bars at last year's Worlds got first on bars here, and the highest score of any apparatus with a 15.800; bars is her specialty. Romanian's Andreea Grigore and Alina Stanculescu had an off-competition and didn't make any event finals. Thursday is the all-around final, with 21 gymnasts instead of 24 because only 23 gymnasts did all four events in qualifying and 2 of them were eliminated because of the 2-per-country rule. Men's don't do all-around here, but do team. 2007 "Good Luck Beijing" International Invitational Nov. 28, Beijing Women's All-Around Qualification 1. Dasha Joura AUS 60.000 2. This one shows the equipment: Red floors and mats as you could have guessed. Usually blue in all USA clubs and competitions, just different shades of blue.
In Chinese culture and symbolism, red is the color of good luck and success, and is used for decoration and wedding attire (during the traditional half of the wedding ceremony, while the bridal attire in the modern half is usually white). Money in Chinese societies is traditionally given in red packets. Stock market gains in China and other East Asian countries are displayed in red, while losses are displayed in green. 15 year old Jiang Yuyuan fell twice on the beam on Wednesday's qualifying round (3rd at preliminaries), but made a good comeback to win the gold AA.
"It's my third international event after the world championships and World Cup, so the result is really good," said Jiang, adding she feels better at the all-around and floor exercise events. "You feel tense when you come up the apparatus. I try my best to keep calm and think over my routine before each rotation."

Jiang's coach Xiong Jingbin rated Jiang's performance 85 points out of 100. "She got a quite difficult action in the beam, but consistency is not that assured. I hope she can improve it from competition with other top gymnasts," said Xiong.
Daria Joura:
"It's a win-win situation. For the Beijing Olympics organizers, they check the stadium and we got a chance to get familiar with the Olympic venue," said Joura, adding she would like to share her Beijing experience with teammates back in Australia.
Chellsie Memmel stepped out of bounds twice on floor exercise. Olympic try-out event was her first international competition this year. http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/viewtopic.php?t=12050
