Yup! Paul can make the team again, he's so good. He won the American Cup this year. There's a lot of news on his hand injury during his p-bars routine in the gymnastics news & blogs section: http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/forumdisplay.php?f=439 Most recent: Top U.S. gymnast undergoing surgery (CBC) http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/showthread.php?p=70807#post70807
He suffered the injury while performing on the parallel bars last week at the U.S. gymnastics championships in Houston. His recovery could take more than four weeks. Missing the Olympic trials means he will petition for a spot on the U.S. team headed to Beijing. If Hamm is healthy, it is unlikely he will be denied a spot by American gymnastics officials. The men's gymnastics competition starts Aug. 9.
He's beginning rehab Thursday. From their own website: http://makingtheolympics.com

Paul had surgery today at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Everything went great and he will begin light therapy later this week. He is doing everything he can in order to recover as fast as possible. He had 9 screws put in to stabalize the bone. Check out the picture on the Video Calendar. Also check out his surgery video. We all hope he has a quick and successful recovery. Morgan has qualified to the Olympic Trials and is back in the gym training. He is looking to improve a lot over the next several weeks in hopes of qualifying onto the Olympic Team. Updated: 5-27-08
Video interview on NBCOlympics.com: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/share.html?videoid=6a22df04-dc74-4f25-b96f-a6308d28af5d Paul's surgery video: http://www.makingtheolympics.com/videos/paul_surgery.html They don't actually show the surgery part, with the blood, etc., but an x-ray of the screws/rod. Dominique Dawes is known for having a lot of screws in her; they did an ABC "fluff" on it. ABC had the gymnastics coverage then I think.
A broken bone in his right hand will keep Paul Hamm, the reigning all-around Olympic gymnastics champion, out of the U.S. trials next month, but not necessarily out of the Beijing Games. If the same injury happened to Michael Phelps, imperial master of the pool, he'd have to find a waterproof cast and swim through the pain. Injury petitions don't exist in his sport or in track and field. Their Olympic trials are merciless. It doesn't matter if you're Dan O'Brien, the best decathlete in the world.
Interesting article, check out: http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/showthread.php?t=67053

Update on Paul Hamm:
Hamm hopes to be back on gymnastics equipment within the next four weeks. He'll have to petition for a spot on the Beijing squad because he'll miss the Olympic trials -- June 19-22 in Philadelphia -- but USA Gymnastics is almost certain to grant the petition if he's healthy. The U.S. men have a training camp July 13-22, and Hamm would have to show he was ready to compete there. The men's competition in Beijing starts Aug. 9. Hamm said he's using a bone stimulator, doing physical therapy and icing the hand to speed the healing and his recovery. He has had some inflammation, but his mobility and flexibility remain good. "Paul tested his grip strength and it's pretty good," said twin brother Morgan. While he's not able to do anything on gymnastics equipment, Hamm has been spending plenty of time in the gym to keep the rest of his body in shape. The fitter he is, the quicker his routines will come back once he's cleared to do gymnastics again. He's doing exercises to strengthen his legs, stomach and back, along with cardio work. He's even done some back flips. "I don't tell the doctor about that," he said.
