Jana Bieger out of Tyson American Cup - leg hurt
Florida gymnast Jana Bieger hurt her left leg Wed. night during practice from a bad landing on a tumbling pass - so she is withdrawing from this weekend's Tyson American Cup in Jacksonville, Florida. The picture in this article "Local gymnast hurt, will miss event" - http://www.miamiherald.com/416/story/28198.html shows her in crutches. X-ray already shows no break in the leg, going for MRI now. Competitive gymnasts get a lot of x-rays and mri's and quick, to make sure if they can do the upcoming competition and what their plan should be, don't you think? Also in the article:
Bieger is the 17-year-old daughter of three-time German Olympic gymnast Andrea Bieger, who acts as her coach and last week opened a 22,600-square-foot gym in Deerfield Beach.
wow, big gym! Opening round is actually today...8 men and 8 women advance to the all-around finals Saturday...I guess they re-show these parts on Saturday. So, the new U.S. women's team is now: Bianca Flohr (16) of Ohio, Natasha Kelley (17) of Texas, Samantha Peszek (15) of Indiana, and Shawn Johnson (15) of Iowa. Shawn Johnson is the one who got gold in vault, balance beam, floor, and all-round and silver on bars at the U.S. Junior Championships last year. The U.S. men's team is: Guillermo Alvarez (Denver), Alexander Artemev (Lakewood, CO), Raj Bhavsar (Houston) and Jonathan Horton (Houston). Artemev. Funny how the article lists the ages of the women's team gymnasts and not the men, huh?!! lol :D

Shayla Worley is going to replace Jana at the Tyson American Cup. She finished 2nd AA at the 2006 American Cup (Nastia Liukin got 1st). Worley didn't compete at the 2006 national Championhips and World Championships b/c of hamstring injuries.

Jana and Shawn Johnson would have made a good pair to go into the Satuday finals. ...next up Nationals.

In case ur wondering what happened to Ashley Priess who was originally named to the U.S. women's team: they added Bianca Flohr and Natasha Kelley and took out Ashley (5 person team, 2 can advance to finals) on Sunday 2/26 after an intrasquad competition in Houston. The rankings there were: Johnson, Flohr, Bieger, Kelley, Peszek, then Priess. From Ashley's coach Mary Lee Tracy:
"We knew coming in Ashley wasn't completely ready," said Mary Lee Tracy, who coaches both Flohr and Priess. "She had a back injury that set her back about four weeks. Ash has added some new skills that needed more time." "Although we are disappointed we accept the decision," Tracy said. "If Ashley needed to be replaced, she is happy it is with Bianca!"
(from "Flohr, Kelley Added to American Cup" - http://www.intlgymnast.com/news/2007/feb/022607_amcup.html)
